Doubles-Plus-One & Two

Differentiation Activity

Students draw cards and write the equation using those numbers with the sum.  If that equation is a doubles-plus-one or doubles-plus-two fact, they score a point.  The first student to 5 points is the winner.

Students will take turns drawing a card, doubling that numeral, and then adding one.  They will place a counter on the sum and try to get four counters on the game board.

Differentiation Activity

For each doubles flash card that a student draws, they will write either the related doubles-plus-one fact or the doubles-plus-two-fact on a white board along with the answer.  They can also write the turnaround fact.  This can be done individually or with a partner who then can check the work.

Students can play the Game Double Up by drawing a card, doubling the number, and placing a counter on the matching sum.  The student who can place 4 counters in a row is the winner!

Differentiation Activity

Students will need 10 connecting cubes or objects, a container or bag, and a recording sheet in a protector.  The first student will choose the starting number of blocks and place some in the bag or container.  They will write the corresponding subtraction sentence.  Their partner will write a related subtraction sentence.

Roll and Subtract

Module 4 Lesson 3

Students partner up to play this game. Both players have a game board.  Player 1 will draw cards from two stacks of cards.  They will match the amount from the larger number to their game board.  They will cross out the amount from the smaller card and write the subtraction sentence.  Player 2 will do the same.  If a player draws a number they have already played, they lose that turn. The first player to complete all subtractions sentences is the winner.
