Tens and Ones

Differentiation Activity

This can be player with partners or a group up to 4.  Each student will get a hundreds chart.  Students take turns drawing a card and rolling a standard dice.  The standard dice tells how many ones or tens they will mark on their hundreds chart.  If they roll 4 tens, they can place a counter on any number with 4 tens.  If they roll 5 ones, they can place their counter on any number with 5 ones.  The first student to get four in a row, is the winner.

Comparing Numbers Greater than 100

Differentiation Activity

Students will draw a card from the 100s, 10s, and 1s piles to create a three-digit number.  They will put their numbers correctly on the game board to compare their numbers.

Counting Sequence to 130

Differentiation Activity

Students can use the chart the work on the counting sequence to 130.  For each question, they can use a different color.
Activities include:

  • What numbers do you say when you start at 80 and count by 10s?
  • What numbers do you say when you start at 85 and count by 5s?
  • What numbers do you say when you start at 82 and count by 2s?

Differentiation Activity

Students take the cards from the previous lesson (or print the already filled out ones below) and write out the number names on a white board or paper.  They can do this and compare or take turns.  If they finish, they can write one more or one less than the number.

Writing All Three-Digit Numbers to 130

Differentiation Activity

Students roll the dice and place that number as the ones of the expander cards.  They then draw a card with a 0,1 or 2 for the tens position.  Students will take turns drawing a card and represent it with base-ten blocks.  They could also do it together to compare after they are done building the number.

Differentiation Activity

Make a copy of the first page of the support in one color and the second page of the support in a different color.  Students draw a card from each of the two colored piles and read the number.  Their partner will then build the number with base-ten blocks.  Roles are switched and the activity is repeated.

Differentiation Activity

Students will draw card marked either 0 or 2 and put the digit in the tens place.  They will then roll a dice and put that digit in the ones place.  When all the cards are filled out, the students can draw a card, read it, and represent the numbers with base-ten blocks.

Students will take turns creating a 3-Digit Number on the Numeral Expander between 121-130.  The other student will build that number with base-ten blocks.  Students compare and switch roles.  Students repeat until all  numbers have been covered.

Student can either roll dice or draw playing cards to create two, two-digit numbers.  They will then use either a white board or even s sticky note to do the comparison.  They can also switch the numbers around to show less than.

Tens and Ones Place Value

Differentiation Activity

Students will have numeral cards 1-9 and a hundreds chart.  The students will start with the tens place and flip over a number.  If the 3 was flipped over they will cover a number that has a 3 in the tens place. The next number flipped over will be used in the ones place.  The students will place a counter over a number that has that numeral in the ones place.  The students alternate who places their counter first and whether the numeral will be in the tens place or ones.  When a student has four in a row, they are the winner.

Ordering Two-Digit Numbers

Students will each get a copy of Support 32 Cards.  They will shuffle and draw 4 cards without looking.  They will then flip them over at the same time and race to put them in order from least to greatest.  The winner gets a point.  The student who has the most points after five rounds is the winner.

Differentiation Activity

Students will take two different color dice and determine which color is the tens and which is the ones.  (Alternatively one dice and the first roll is tens and second is ones.)  They record their number on the recording sheet or a white board.  The greater number receives one point.  The student who has the most points after five rounds is the winner.  If you want them to play longer, you can determine a number that they play to.

Each student will get a copy of Support 34.  The student will color a different amount of base-ten blocks on each picture.  They will then get with a group of two to three and flip over a card.  The group will determine who has the greatest amount and that student will receive a point.  The student who has the most points either can earn a point, or they can collect the cards.  The student with the most points or cards at the end is the winner.

Matching Two-Digit Numbers

Students, in groups of 4, divide the numeral and number name cards between themselves.  The base-ten pictures go in a pile in the middle.  After a base-ten picture is revealed, the students who have the corresponding numeral and number name place the cards beside the pictures.  Those are put aside and the next picture is drawn.  The first student to get rid of all their cards is the winner.
